Daen is a multifunctional stool inspired by the ellipse as a symbol of focus, stillness, and arrival. Transforming between stool, kneeling bench, and table, it creates a space for meditation, prayer, and mindful reflection.

Daen is a multifunctional piece of furniture that combines a stool, kneeling bench, and table in a single object. The project explores how design can create space for stillness, focus, and contemplation in an increasingly fast-paced world.
Its concept is inspired by the ellipse, both as a natural form and as a rhetorical figure of omission. Just as an ellipsis removes the unnecessary to emphasize what matters most, Daen reduces form and function to their essentials. The result is an object that encourages presence, mindfulness, and reflection.

The design consists of two elements connected through a circular sandstone centerpiece. When stacked, they form a sculptural stool. By separating and rotating the upper element, it transforms into a kneeling bench, while the lower element becomes a small table or altar. This transformation supports practices such as meditation, prayer, journaling, or quiet contemplation.
The project was developed as part of a collaboration with the Handwerkskammer Dresden. While the concept, design development, visual communication, photography, and film were created by me, the physical realization was primarily carried out in close collaboration with a master craftswoman.
Daen was exhibited at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden at the „Japanisches Palais“ until December 21, 2025, as part of the exhibition „Mythos Handwerk. Zwischen Ideal und Alltag“.
